Customised Employment

Customised Employment empowers people’s choice and control –  using a person-centred approach. Customised Employment is a bespoke approach to employment pathways. It is part of a continuum of employment options, such as Disability Employment Services (DES) and Australian Disability Enterprises (ADE’s).Customised Employment is person-oriented. It's designed to find a career pathway that aligns with the passions, hobbies, skills, and goals of the person using the process. Customised Employment brings choice and control in employment to people with disabilities.

NDIS - How to fund Customised Employment

You can get support for customised employment using your National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)show definition plan or through some Disability Employment Services (DES).NDIS participants of working age can access support for employment, including customised employment. You will need a long-term employment goal in your NDIS plan about having a job. You'll also need short-term goals if you're starting out. Many service providers offer customised employment, but remember that you are responsible for making decisions about your support. Customised employment is not about one size fits all or taking the available job. With ROS, it's about finding your strengths matched to an employer for mutually beneficial employment.

Discovery - building the big picture of you and your needs.

Discovery is a process designed to get to know you and work out your:

  • strengths

  • personal qualities

  • skills

  • hobbies and special interests

  • Personal preferences.

Discovery is the first step in a longer process called customised employment, which helps people with intellectual disabilities work in jobs that are a good match for them. Access Customised Employment and Discovery supports using your NDIS plan Through ROS today!

Each step in the Discovery process helps you understand what work might be good for you. These include:

  1. We are working with you to create a work profile based on our discoveries.

  2. We are working with you to highlight any work-related themes coming out of the process so far.

  3. Observing you doing activities you’re interested in and may have skills in, such as a hobby club, sport or dance class. Photos and videos in these settings can also help create a visual resume or portfolio.

  4. We are supporting you to find and meet with employers to learn about different kinds of jobs and do work experience or volunteer work.

  5. Observing you at home and in your community to learn about your capacity and the resources around you.

  6. We are supporting you to make a plan to explore jobs and workplaces that match your work profile.

  7. Talk with your friends and acquaintances, such as school staff, people who supported your work experience and others you may have volunteered with.

  8. Meeting with you and your family when appropriate.

  9. Support you to get ready for and participate in interviews with employers whose workplaces could match your interests. These interviews help you get information and advice about different jobs and careers.

  10. We are creating a career portfolio that includes a resume and cover letters.
